Public Sound System

An ongoing sound intervention designed and fabricated by Misc Arts Activities member, Jonathan Igharas.

Inspired by mobile DJ and sound system culture, bicycles, public art, and urban design, Public Sound System is a service and platform dedicated to transforming passive spaces into collective places by creating communal experiences, interventions, and activations using music and bikes as social connectors.

The DJ Trike is a vehicle for urban exploration and play. Inspired by bicycle and tricycle cultures worldwide, The DJ Trike was materialized to become a platform for urban communication and interaction, as well a method to transcend common perceptions associated with current pedal powered transportation.

Starting with a utility tricycle from Beijing and re-introducing it into the context of contemporary urban street culture, this music inspired trike enables DJs to freely roam city streets and meander through the narrowest of alleyways.

Powered by a rechargeable marine battery and a power inverter, The DJ Trike is designed to house the essential audio/visual equipment to create sensory-filled social interventions, project onto architecture and infrastructure, and use public space as a play space.

Sliding rails allow for quick deployment and easy access to the platform contained within - making it possible to move from one location to the next without additional, repetitive setup. A side-access storage cabinet provides a space to store extra wires and other miscellaneous items.

The DJ Trike's mobile nature allows it to reclaim, activate and enhance public space. By creating catalysts for social interaction and public engagement, The DJ Trike redefines the urban experience by directly connecting to city street life through the creation of playful and interactive sensory interventions. The DJ Trike transforms public space from a neutral space into a collective, memorable place.
