Flourish
Flourish is a Public Art Sculpture design proposal for an urban Northwest coast building development. Miscellaneous Arts Activities was shortlisted to submit our design, with the concept prompt: “Ying Yang.”
Miscellaneous Arts Activities proposal, called, Flourish samples two variations of local clam shapes, specifically the Butter and Little Neck Clams which we found in our research, were harvested by local First Nations. Citing biophilic design and organic minimalism, We’ve scaled clam forms to be larger than life but in proximity to human height to be easily seen from a distance and distinguish itself from the landscape design, creating a strong presence. At the heart of Flourish lies the Clam Garden, an enduring aspirational testament to the symbiotic relationship between human and the environment. The grand terrazzo clam sculptures are playfully interspersed alongside the development slope to stand as both landmark and symbol along vibrant streets.
Flourish cites the spirit of place, drawing inspiration from a profound respect for the rhythms of nature and community. Just as the intertidal zone provides a cradle for juvenile clams, fostering growth and survival, the sculpture garden is envisioned as a space where art and nature coalesce, inviting contemplation.
Our theme underpins the Ying Yang philosophy, where duality and balance are explored not just as abstract concepts, but as tangible expressions of harmony in the natural world and human relationships.
Flourish was not chosen for this Public Art Competition; Miscellaneous Arts Activities retains the rights to rework our concept and forms into future artworks and for the design to be considered for other projects.
